ElkThe wildlife in Canada is just incredible- the highlight was these little ground squirrels that were the most curious little things. They'd come right up to you and smile for the camera. One was even starting to get into the camera bag!
Day 5: Trip
Okay, so we are back home.... I'm going to try to remember what we did on which days...
July 15th, 2010 Thursday
Today was another long day in the car, about five hours total. We drove from Edson, Alberta down to Lake Louise, which is just about 45 minutes north of Banff. The drive was simply beautiful! All of the mountains along the way were just totally unbelievable. The lakes, rivers, waterfalls, creeks and ponds were pretty amazing too. Today was one of the better days in regards to animal viewing. Saw Big Horn Sheep, Caribou, Fox with a baby, Deer, Elk, Black Bear and a Grizzly Bear too! Yes, I said a Grizzly Bear, it was right on the side of the road, same with the black bear, but a little further up the road. It was the very first time I’d ever seen a Grizzly. They are such an enormous creature – thank God it was afar and not on the trail where we were hiking!
Funny story while we were watching the Caribou… it was DIRECTLY on the side of the road. Here in Canada when you see a PILE of vehicles pulled over on both shoulders of the road, you know it’s something good, usually! So being curious as to what they were looking at, we pulled over. All these people were literally TWO FEET away approaching closer and closer and this animal wasn’t even frightened. How stupid it was to do that – one little swipe of those huge antlers and you would have been in for a treat.
Something not so great happened this morning; by mistake I accidentally deleted all of the pictures from the first few days thus far. It hasn’t been so great of a day in that realm. I’m totally going to make up for it over the next few days though. I find myself greatly wishing that I had a wide angle lens for these mountains and bodies of water. The Canadian Rockies will definitely be a place I’m coming back to.
We also went to the Athabasca Falls – it’s between Jasper and the Columbia Ice fields. It was pretty darn spectacular! I’ll tell you one thing; I really am wishing I knew a little French. People come up to you asking if you would take their picture and they didn’t know any English. It’s very amusing trying to communicate with people when they don’t understand a thing you are saying, or vice versa.
The highlight of the day was visiting the Columbia Ice fields located between Jasper and Lake Louise. One word describes that experience “Amazing” I don’t even know where to begin… Well that pretty much sums up the day. We’re almost in Lake Louise now. Have a wonderful day, thanks for reading!

Day 4: Trip
Not much happened today. Our cousins had to run into Edmonton for a few appointments this morning, we stayed behind, ended up driving the backroads and then into town. Saw a few more deer, a magpie, bald eagle, and a beaver. The highlight today was riding the 4-wheelers out in the 80 acre field/woods in the back of our cousin's property. Boy, that was such fun! All the beautiful trees, the sunset, breeze blowing in your face, long grasses, pastures of brightly colored wildflowers (especially Indian Paintbrush -its this beautiful red flower) Everything that God created is just amazing beyond belief!!! After that ride, we dropped off the few adults and us girls (brown girls & cousin Stacey) headed down the dirt road to go view this pond way out in the middle of nowhere.
Let's just say Canada has so much beauty to offer! So many different species of wildlife, it's just incredible! The snow-capped mountains are quite breathtaking as well! I think if I ever get a job with National Geographic the very first place I'd go is to The Canadian Rockies. I love it! :)
We saw many, many old cabins as well today. I took about 35 pictures. I'd like to upload them along with all the others, but due to slow internet, it's not going to be happening anytime soon.
We leave early in the morning to head back through Jasper and then to Lake Louise. Lord Willing, the weather will be much more cooperative so I can get some pictures.
Well, I should get going... Long day ahead of us tomorrow. -- Kaylie

Trip - Day 3
Yesterday morning I awoke to a big surprise, it was snowing, yes I said SNOWING. And they weren't little snowflakes, they were enormous. 'Twas a lovely 35 degrees. Here we came on this trip prepared for nice warm summer weather with the tents, and I don't know why we even left home. It was in the 80's back there. We walked around town in Jasper attempting to dodge the precipitation. Mom decided to drive all of the backroads she could find on our way out to Edson to visit our cousins. Along the way we decided to stop and take a "little hike." And yes, it was pouring AGAIN, the temperature being no higher then 38. BRR!!!!! So about the hike.... More like a short walk really... We went up these steep, slippery, small stairs to the lookout over the river (I don't recall which one because I've seen too many bodies of water) :P It was very beautiful up there even though we were freezing cold. Haha, I think we should of scheduled this trip later in the summer when it would have been warmer. :-/ I was going to add about 15 pics from yesterday, but due to the slower internet connection, it would take all day. I'll add some pictures when we get back home. Out to go hopefully photograph some old cabins today - so far, no rain!

Canadian Rockies: Day 1 & 2

Where we stayed in Jasper.
We highly recommend staying at Sandra's Place while visiting in Jasper. The mainfloor suite we stayed in had two queen beds, plus pull-out beds, sleeper couches and a single bed too. Appears to have room for a group of about nine or so. Plus a full kitchen. Her nightly rate was very affordable for everything that we were able to use and do. Super cozy and Sandra is very kind and sweet. Having lived in Jasper for more than thirty years she is knowledgeable where to go and what to see. BTW she has a room in the basement that will accomodate two as well. Call Sandra at 780-852-3389 or 780-931-3389.

After spending practically the WHOLE day in the car we finally arrived at Mt. Robson. Mt. Robson is about 1 hour from Jasper National Park, Alberta. After spending the night there, we went on a few hikes the following morning. Now of course it was pouring rain, what else were we to do during the day? Definitely not stay in the car nor tent all day... We got soaked, but the reward was sure great. The end of the hike we came to this gorgeous deep blue lake. To bad it wasn't warmer, it would have been great for swimming - other than it being glacier filled! :) I didn't sleep all that well though that night, due to the beautiful lightening storm, a great downpour and then the crunching sound of branches behind our tent didn't help any! ( I've never been so scared in my life, I thought for sure it was a bear! ) Okay moving on.... We arrived in Jasper at about 12:30 p.m. today. Turns out the weather was no different then Mt. Robson. 'Twas a lovely 45 degrees with a downpour. Boy, this trip is really looking wet. Ah well... Due to the rain there was NO WAY we were tenting this evening, so right now we are in this Private Residence - basement suite" Sure is great to look out the window, I just have to smile because I know what it would of been like in the tent "flooding" perhaps? Well, that's all I have to say for now - I'll try to write more another day. I'm not to sure if I'll get a chance to get back on the internet again though. -- Kaylie
Funny Story: So as we were pulling into the Private Residence Basment Suite - the Lady/owner ran out there and was telling us where to park and all of that stuff, well, she was looking in the back telling Samantha and Casidy (my sisters) where to park. We were looking at her kind of funny. A moment went by and the Lady said, "Okay, who is the mom here?" Haha we just all cracked up laughing! You see, both of my sisters are taller then my mom and I, so I guess that could of been why they looked older?.?. 'Twas hilarious anyways!!!
